The flip-style foldable phone market has become increasingly competitive. While book-style foldables keep their prices high, flip phones have seen prices drop every year. Motorola helped start this trend with the launch of the Razr (2023), offering an affordable Razr with slightly lower-end specs alongside the Razr+ with flagship-level hardware.
Samsung, meanwhile, continues to offer the flagship Galaxy Z Flip 6 at a high price, but it’s expected to refresh the lineup soon and introduce a cheaper option to better compete with Motorola.
However, things took a turn in 2025. Alongside the Razr (2025) and Razr+ (2025), Motorola introduced its first-ever Razr Ultra flip phone, carrying an even steeper $1,300 price tag. Unlike some other flagship smartphones, though, Motorola backs the premium price with serious features in the Razr Ultra (2025). Here are a few reasons why it lives up to the “Ultra” name.

Both screens on the Razr Ultra are just plain gorgeous
Big, bright, sharp, and smooth
Similar to previous generations, the Razr Ultra features both a cover display and an inner-foldable display, but these screens boast some of the best specs Motorola has ever offered on a foldable. Like the other Razr phones, the Razr Ultra has a full-cover display that stretches edge-to-edge, packing a 4-inch AMOLED panel with up to a 165Hz refresh rate and 3,000 nits of peak brightness, making it easily visible outdoors.
The inner-foldable display is a 7-inch LTPO AMOLED panel supporting the same 165Hz smooth refresh rate, but it pushes brightness even further to 4,500 nits. As expected, the display supports HDR10+ playback and Dolby Vision, and it’s incredibly sharp with a 464 pixels-per-inch (PPI) pixel density.

The design actually feels exciting, not boring
A foldable that finally looks as good as it feels
One of the best features of the Razr Ultra (2025) is its design. While most traditional flagship Android smartphones are starting to look repetitive, especially with the dull color schemes many brands are now choosing, the Razr Ultra brings something fresh to the table. It’s not quite at the Moto Mods level of customization we loved a decade ago, but the Razr Ultra offers finishes we rarely see on modern smartphones.
The Razr Ultra is available in four distinct options: Pantone Scarab featuring Alcantara for a soft-touch fabric feel, Real Wood with an actual wooden finish, and Pantone Rio Red and Pantone Cabaret, both offering a premium leather-like texture. These finishes are quite different from the standard glass and metal finishes found on most other smartphones today.

It’s a surprisingly durable smartphone
It’s tough enough for real-world daily use
Many people still hesitate to buy foldable smartphones due to concerns about fragility. While companies have made significant strides in improving the durability of foldable phones, they are often still perceived as less durable than traditional slab phones. However, the Moto Razr Ultra is built to handle tougher use and feels impressively durable.
It features IP48 dust and water resistance, with Motorola claiming it can survive in 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, making it suitable for poolside or beach outings. Additionally, Motorola has used tough materials like Gorilla Glass Ceramic for the cover display, providing solid resistance against accidental drops and scratches. The hinge has also been upgraded and is now made from titanium alloy.
Thanks to the new hinge materials, the Razr Ultra can now open at multiple angles, not just fully open or closed — something that wasn’t possible with previous generations of Razr phones.

The camera setup this time is more than just decent
A serious upgrade over last year’s flagship model
Most “Ultra” branded Android smartphones put a heavy focus on the camera, and the Razr Ultra follows suit. The Razr Ultra features an upgraded 50MP primary camera compared to last year’s Razr+ (2024), now allowing more light intake and offering features like PDAF and OIS. The telephoto lens has been swapped for a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, which is particularly useful for capturing selfies with the primary camera using the cover display.
The front camera on the inner foldable display has also been upgraded to 50MP, making it much better suited for video calls and selfies. There are additional improvements too, like Pantone Validated Color and Skin Tones, helping images appear more natural, along with 8K video recording support at up to 30fps.

It has a dedicated AI key that’s actually useful
Quick access to smarter features with just one press
Similar to the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus we reviewed earlier this year, the Razr Ultra ships with a dedicated AI button on the side frame. Pressing this button launches Motorola’s AI suite — aptly called Moto AI — which helps you perform a variety of tasks efficiently.
The suite includes features like Catch Me Up, which summarizes missed notifications and prioritizes urgent messages so you can get back on track quickly after being away from your device. You can also use it as a space to save ideas with Remember This, allowing you to easily store important information, screenshots, or voice memos and recall them later when needed.
Other features include Pay Attention, which lets Moto AI start recording conversations and automatically transcribe and summarize them, and Image Studio, which enables users to generate images, stickers, and even wallpapers using generative AI.

The performance here lives up to the Ultra name
Top-tier hardware for smooth multitasking and gaming
For the past couple of years, Motorola had been shipping even its most expensive Razr models without truly top-tier flagship specs. But the Razr Ultra changes that.
The Moto Razr Ultra (2025) comes equipped with the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, coupled with up to 1TB of internal storage and 16GB of RAM. The phone runs Android 15 out of the box. On the whole, the Razr Ultra is more than capable of handling anything you throw at it, whether it’s gaming or running heavy apps.

Big battery and fast charging on a flip foldable
Finally, a clamshell that doesn’t die too soon
While most flip-style phones are often criticized for their battery life, the Moto Razr Ultra addresses that issue. It comes with a large 4,700 mAh battery that easily provides a full day of use on a single charge.
Not only that, but it also comes with support for 68W fast wired charging, making it one of the fastest-charging flip-style foldables in the country — and even faster than some traditional Android phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. The Razr Ultra also supports 30W wireless charging.
Motorola’s Razr Ultra 2025 finally feels worthy of the Ultra branding
Over the last few years, flip phones had started to feel like an afterthought for most Android OEMs. But the Razr Ultra (2025) finally feels like a device worthy of the Ultra branding. There’s a reason why the Razr+ (2024) kept finding its way back into our pockets after testing many new phones, and this year, it has been replaced by the Razr Ultra.
