Summary

  • Google Messages beta now allows snoozing chats for 1, 8, or 24 hours.
  • A snooze icon also appears when a chat is long-pressed in the inbox.
  • You can set Messages to notify you when someone @mentions you in a snoozed chat.

It’s easy to snooze notifications on Android, enabling you to get back to less important alerts later in the day. WhatsApp, Telegram, and other messaging apps also allow you to snooze notifications, with Google Messages being the only exception. However, back in April, Google was spotted working on such a feature for its messaging app, and now, two months later, the company is rolling out the feature to select users on the beta channel.

In the latest Google Messages beta (version messages.android_20250602_05_RC00), a new Snooze chat option appears on a contact’s page. Tapping it lets you snooze that conversation for 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or Always. There’s also an option to allow notifications “for when you are @mentioned.” Google has yet to roll out @mentions support in Messages, so it may launch both features simultaneously.

Alternatively, long-pressing on a chat in the Google Messages inbox brings up a snooze icon in the toolbar at the top. The option appears for both regular SMS texts and RCS conversations.

When snoozed, a clock icon appears next to that conversation in the Messages inbox. When you open a snoozed conversation, Google Messages displays a banner reminding you that notifications are paused until the specified snooze time. You can tap the “Stop snooze” button to cancel the notification snoozing immediately.

Since Google Messages currently lacks a snooze feature, your only option is to turn off notifications manually for noisy and active conversations. This might not always work, as you’ll need to remember to revisit the chat later in the day when you’re free.

I can see the snooze features in Google Messages on only one device, indicating this might be a limited server-side rollout from Google’s side. Still, given that the feature works properly, it will likely make its way to the stable channel sooner rather than later.

Google Messages beta also rolled out an enhanced media picker

Besides the Snooze functionality, Google is also rolling out a revamped media picker to Messages beta users, complete with a mini camera viewfinder for quicker photo capture. It enables faster sharing of images and videos and includes an option to share them in “HD+” original quality.
