Back in May, we learned about an under-development Google Photos feature called Remix, designed to let users convert their still images into unique artworks with four style options: anime, comics, sketches, and 3D animations. Google officially took the wraps off Remix last month, along with the photo-to-video tool. The Photos team is now gearing up for the imminent release of Remix by giving us a preview of its capabilities.
In a community post, Google offers a brief explanation of Remix and the available art styles. Getting started with Remix is as simple as tapping the Create new button, denoted by a + icon in the top right of the Google Photos homepage.
Here, you will find a long list of options, including Album, Collage, Highlight video, Cinematic photo, and Animation. The Remix feature, if available in your Google Photos app, will slot in just below Animation. First-time users will find a banner introducing Remix and its functionality, followed by a Try now button. Next, you will be asked to choose between the four preset styles, pick a photo of your choice, and hit “Generate” (via 9to5Google).
Bring life to your still images

If you like what Remix has created for you, hit Save or Share. Google recommends users hit “Regenerate” if they’re unsatisfied with the result of the remixed image.
Alternatively, you can “upload a well-lit, focused, or front-facing portrait photo of one or few subjects,” and regenerate the image for better results with Remix, Google says. There’s also a disclaimer about this feature being experimental, with Google adding that remixed images may not always resemble the original photos.
Although Remix was expected to roll out in the US on the day it was announced late last month, it’s not yet available to all Google Photos users in the region. But with Google actively prepping users for its arrival, it’s safe to say that its wider release is not far away.
You likely won’t need a big update to get Remix on your Google Photos app, with 9to5Google speculating that it could be made available to devices as part of a server-side update.
Are you seeing the Remix option in Google Photos yet?
